Many sound cards are muted by default in Mepis if not already in database.

Double-click the speaker icon on your taskbar to open KMix. If you soundcard isn't in Mepis database all volume controls will show them muted (dark green) and volume sliders all the way to 0%.

Go to Settings | Configure - KMix and check Show labels and hit OK.

Click Master and PCM green circle so they are bright green (activates or unmutes) and raise the volume sliders all the way up. Now you can enjoy sound in mepis.
